The Power of Narratives: Understanding the Impact of Learning Someone's Story

Yesterday, I met the most interesting woman. While I was working on my debate research, a woman and a child came to sit down at a table behind me. They had delicious pizza, and I could smell the sizzling crust through the air. As I was writing, I saw a pair of two, huge hazel eyes staring back at me. I turned around, and the little girl was shamelessly staring.

I didn't mind of course. She was an adorable little girl, with long wavy hair and a dress with a forest print. Her mother said hello, and was smiling at her daughter. As I started talking with them, I realized that the woman had the most beautiful story.

A Romanian journalist, the woman had spent years of her life writing news and stories. She had stories of meeting world leaders, going to the white house, you name it. Meanwhile, she fell in love with a man who wanted to move to America. She traveled with him here and got married, but it didn't last. She had her child on her own, wanting to be independent and live her own life. As she gazed at her daughter, she said, "She is my only child. I love her very, very much." I could see the tangible love between the mother and the daughter, and I saw the connection between them. She had created such a beautiful family, just the two of them, and had everything she needed.

Everyone has a story. More times than not, they are willing to share it with you if you are just compassionate enough. I had such a wonderful experience because I was open and curious about this person, and their story will remain with me forever.

A simple tip from Sloan:

1. Ask someone how they are. This might sound cliche, but sometimes that's all they truly need.

2. Dig deep. Sometimes, people just need someone to talk to. Don't talk over them, just listen.

3. Have a good cry. You need to cleanse when you are having a rough day, and crying isn't shameful in any way.
